PORTABILITY:
Large format scanners are generally fairly sensitive devices that are heavy and awkward to carry. A short, sharp knock can throw them out of alignment, necessitating a time-consuming calibration. Or worse. I know just how easy it is to bump them into something. You get away with it for so long, then one day ... it's "oh *@~%!"
GEI WideFormat, the US distributor of Colortrac large format scanners, has released a durable aluminum carrying case designed to protect the Colortrac SmartLF Ci 40 from rough treatment and possible breakage during transport. The SmartLF Ci 40 sits in a snug, profiled bed of shock absorbing foam cushion material and is held down by gentle pressure from the foam-covered lid. Storage for cables, software, etc., is provided.
At just 55lbs, the Colortrac SmartLF Ci 40 is the world's lightest and most compact large format scanner. This makes it the easiest large format scanner to carry around, especially over short distances. However, like any scanner in transport, it is vulnerable to being damaged at any time while it being taken out of a car, through doors and up stairs. GEI's carrying case is designed to protect it during transport between one site and the next.
The SmartLF Ci 40 is Colortrac's latest CIS large format scanner. It is an affordable 600 dpi optical, ENERGY STAR compliant 40" wide scanner designed to work specifically with technical documents. It has a unique "clamshell" design where the document being scanned is drawn into the scanner by a large drum, rather than the rollers common to all other large format scanners. This design has the benefit of face-up scanning with documents uniquely exiting from the front rather than the rear. It makes document collection easier and allows the SmartLF Ci 40 to be pushed up against a wall in offices where space is at a premium.
Probably on account of its overall lightness, small size and its dedication to scanning technical documents and maps, GEI is promoting the SmartLF ci 40 under the heading "Scan On The Run!"
GEI is offering the SmartLF Ci 40 as a device suitable for tranportation between different sites. When transported, every scanner's vulnerability to accidents is increased. If you own a Colortrac SmartLF Ci 40 and are travelling widely with it, it makes sense to invest in GEI's carrying case. It is a good way to ensure you are doing as much as you can to protect your SmartLF Ci 40 investment from the unexpected. Anyone travelling any distance by vehicle to do regular scanning work with this scanner should give this purchase serious consideration.
The combined weight of the SmartLF Ci 40 scanner and its case is 99lbs, probably too heavy for most people to lug about. Cleverly, GEI's carrying case includes heavy duty, built-in casters that allow it to be rolled along an even surface.
